Thanks to the generosity of the English company Cheek by Jowl and its founders, the director Declan Donnellan and the scenographer Nick Ormerod, the full recording of The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare can be viewed free of charge on PiccoloTeatro.tv until 15 June 2020. Directed by Declan Donnellan and performed in English (with subtitles in Italian), the play also performed to full houses at the Teatro Strehler in the 2015/2016 season.
One of Shakespeare’s masterpieces - written in the same period as The Tempest - The Winter’s Tale tells of a foolish and paranoid king who destroys his own family. One of Shakespeare’s later plays - it follows the writing of the great tragedies - it is a piece in which the arduous struggle for rendition creates hope, the initial darkness makes way for joy, and Time leads the characters towards an astounding ending...
