I holiday among your stones and your
mists. I rest in Piazza
del Duomo. In place of the stars,
every evening, words light up.
Nothing offers respite from life better
than life.
(Umberto Saba)
In the city in which “nothing offers respite from life better than life”, even the summer is more than just a simple break between one act and the next, a wait for the city to come back to life in the autumn, to pick up speed again with its daily frenzy, the coming and going in the streets, the lights of the theatres that come back on... much more. The curtain doesn’t come down in Milan during the summer; if anything, the city reclaims its bella stagione both on and off stage. It is on an articulated and wide-ranging programme, a true embracing of the city and its many identities, that Estate fuori scena is based.
The aim of the Piccolo with this initiative is to animate the weeks for those living in Milan between July and September with a multicentric and varied programme of different places, experiences and projects. Estate al Castello, Sguardi (d’) Insieme, Immersioni - laboratorio di linguaggi performativi nei quartieri. A rich programme of events, shows and workshop activities - created in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan as part of Milano è Viva - that spreads through the districts, harmonising the voice of the Piccolo with that of the various figures within the city: Atir, Biblioteca Gallaratese, Casa della Carità, COMIN, mare culturale urbano, Il Razzismo è una Brutta Storia…
Estate fuori scena expresses two desires; to expand its view beyond the conventional theatrical space, in the conviction that the theatre is not only a place within the city but above all an expression of sharing; and to experiment through that intimate and urban form of holiday imagined in the words of Saba, “vital regeneration”. A confirmation that all the rest and escape that we seek during the summer also lies in encounters with others, in that form of existing together, side by side, which forms the foundation of the theatrical experience.
