Giorgio Strehler - L'umanità del teatro

Theatre, for the very fact that it is theatre, even in the preparatory phase, is always and only an act of love, an entirely “human” act.  Giorgio Strehler

The Piccolo Teatro is paying tribute to Giorgio Strehler on the twentieth anniversary of his death, which took place at his home in Lugano on 24 December 1997, with two months of shows, events, screenings and exhibitions.

Strehler and… Chekhov, Shakespeare, Brecht, Goldoni

Chekhov, Shakespeare, Brecht, Goldoni: writers who have accompanied my journey as a director for all of these years. Each of these writers is the sign of a certain coherence. I have dedicated my time and my efforts to them. They are like a kind of continuous bass which plays throughout a great theatrical work, and from which various melodic lines diverge and emerge, while remaining forever tied to a secret common thread. Giorgio Strehler
The evenings are coordinated by Stefano de Luca and Enzo Mologni

Teatro Studio Melato, 24 November 2017, 6 p.m.
Strehler/Chekhov
conducted by Fausto Malcovati
with the participation of Lev Dodin and Carlo Tognoli
video accounts by Valentina Cortese, Monica Guerritore and Jack Lang
readings by graduate actors from the Piccolo’s “Luca Ronconi” School of Theatre Yasmin Karam and Marco Risiglione
music by Fiorenzo Carpi played by the students of the “Giuseppe Verdi” conservatory, Milan, Umberto Ruboni (pianoforte), Cristiana Franco (violin), Valentina Cangero (cello), Dea Škorić (mandolin), Paolo Camporesi (accordion)
musical director Cesare Della Sciucca, musical coordination by professor Roberto Tarenzi

A number of protagonists from Strehler's directing history - with Lev Dodin, a maestro of Russian Theatre, for who Chekhov is a focal point - reconstruct Strehler's relationship with Czech poetry. It is a moving journey in which Strehler developed an extraordinary harmony with the scenographer and costume designer Luciano Damiani. Jack Lang and Carlo Tognoli evoke the grand utopia created by the Teatro d’Europa, from conception to realisation.
Free admission, places subject to availability.

Teatro Studio Melato, 4 December 2017 6 p.m.

with Georges Banu, Massimo Foschi, Ezio Frigerio, Gabriele Lavia, Maurizio Nichetti

Thirteen productions which “invented the man”. A relationship which lasted over the years and which gave life to masterpieces of poetry, shows which have become part of the history of all of us and of universal theatre. Accounts are given, both live and through video, by the actors from those plays, with the participation of Georges Banu, one of the most important theatrical scholars of contemporary France.

Credit goes to Strehler, as well as to Paolo Grassi, for the “discovery “in 1956 of Brecht in Italy, a writer which the director studied over forty years and through numerous productions. The subject is discussed by the artists who accompanied them in this theatrical and cultural adventure. With an elaboration by Michel Bataillon, playwright at the TNP of Villeurbanne, the Piccolo’s French companion in the search for an Art Theatre for All.

Teatro Studio Melato, 20 December 2017 6 p.m.

music by Fiorenzo Carpi played by the students of the “Giuseppe Verdi” conservatory, Milan

An alter-ego for a lifetime, Goldoni is the writer that Strehler re-discovered and returned to Italian theatre. With Mémoires, an important project which remained unfinished, the aim of the director was to present his theatre and life. Myriam Tanant, playwright and professor at the Sorbonne, assistant to Strehler in Paris, relives the passion for theatre which the director and Goldoni had in common.
