Following Goldoni and his Il teatro comico, Roberto Latini has now focused his interest on Collodi and his Pinocchio. From that which he defines as “a manual of Italianness”, he has chosen the chapter in which Pinocchio, intrigued by the Great Marionette Theatre, sells the primer which cost Geppetto so much sacrifice to buy a ticket and go and watch the show.
“In the moment in which Pinocchio makes his appearance in the theatre - explains Latini - Harlequin and Pulcinella are bickering on stage, as tradition dictates. Having recognised the presence of their “fellow”, they stop the show to celebrate him, creating discontent among the audience. This is what interested me, as a starting point, the situation on which I wanted to focus: the interruption of a show and its reactions, via a fundamental reflection on the actors, marionette and puppet-master”.
Collodi’s story continues with the arrival of Mangiafuoco, the threats to throw first one and then the other puppet into the flames, up to the final “pardoning” of Pinocchio, who is even given five gold coins which our hero will allow the Fox and the Cat to steal from him... “but that’s another story - Latini continues -. With my actors, the same with which I had the privilege of working for Il teatro comico, I want to explore the space surrounding the plot and its subtleties. As was the case with Goldoni, we are once again on the side of Pirandello. I want to examine theatre through theatre. As the play has also been created for Matera on the occasion of the 2019 celebrations, I could not neglect Italian tradition, Pasolini, or the Leo de Berardinis of Novecento e Mille”.
