Marco Balzano tells the story of a German-speaking couple from South Tyrol – who became Italians at the end of the First World War – in Curon, Val Venosta, between the twenty years of Fascism and the building of the dam that would submerge the town, leaving nothing but the tip of the bell tower as a constant reminder of what had happened.

Trina and Erich. A young woman and a man. Two voices, two witnesses, two victims. We are in Curon, in Val Venosta, just a few kilometres from the Austrian border. The novel by Marco Balzano takes to the stage in a play with two characters and many voices, with Arianna Scommegna and Mattia Fabris playing Trina and Erich, two representatives of an entire community swept away in the name of progress and by a dam that served practically no purpose other than to wipe out the lives of hundreds of families who had resisted everything, including the First and Second World Wars, a change of nationality and Fascism.
«A theatrical mosaic of narrative and dialogue presents yet another terrible chapter in Italian history. A simple, streamlined staging; ancient and melancholic, as Melville would have described it. A story of corruption and tenacity, of violent anger and remorse. Of designs. A story of simple men and women who refused to surrender and who now before the International Criminal Court and for their dead daughter – look back over their long and humiliating defeat» writes Francesco Niccolini, the author and director of the play.
Each in their own way, the two characters, husband and wife, tell their version of the story; between Fontamara and Rashomon, two versions emerge that in part coincide, and in part form different and complementary aspects that combine to present the audience with a bitter and painful picture that is, however, rich in dignity.
Duration: the play is currently in production
