L’anima buona del Sezuan

Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes with interval

The actors from two Piccolo productions directed by Roberto Latini - in 2018 Il teatro comico and Mangiafoco in the current season - Elena Bucci and Marco Sgrosso stage The good person of Szechuan. Written by Bertolt Brecht in the 1930s, it is an ancient yet topical parable, a fable which the author, though his prophetic and lucid eye sharpened by persecution, transforms into a startling play through fragments of history, political questions and matters of ethics.
The good person of Szechuan struck us for its balance between its cold and analytical examination and its poetic vein - wrote Bucci and Sgrosso in the director’s notes -. In a difficult period for the arts, we have chosen to take on this challenge with the instruments of an ancient Italian tradition; the masks and gestures of a form of Commedia dell’Arte translated for contemporary times. We are continuously working to blend languages, points of view, dialogue and audience participation, the grotesque and the tragic, the provocations regarding the present and the evocation of ancient poetry, as always trusting in the cathartic power of the theatre which transforms contradiction into an embrace”.
