Michela Cescon stages the latest, posthumous, novel with which Moravia completed the series of books that began with Gli indifferenti. Set between Rome and Gabon, it is a lucid analysis of the “rules of attraction” which sees the involvement of two married couples who challenge each other through swapping and break-up.
The show is recomended for audiences over the age of 16

Piccolo Teatro Grassi

Four people - a journalist, his editor and their respective wives - go on a journey to Africa, in Gabon, where the journalist is to write a reportage and the editor has financial interests. From the upper-class atmosphere of a familiar and nocturnal Rome, where relationships are hidden and restrained, to Africa, which as Moravia said, is “the most noble monument that nature has ever erected in honour of itself”, and which clearly symbolises an elsewhere, where everything becomes real, without structure, and explodes. Man tends to possess, woman to escape. Definitive possession is impossible and love, like life itself, is a permanent state of alarm.

“I had been thinking for some years - explains Michela Cescon - of staging a piece by Moravia. Not one of his theatrical works, but rather a novel. I have always though he would be perfect for the stage, and that his novels have an almost theatrical structure to them. When I read La donna leopardo, I understood that that was where I wanted to begin. From the end, from the final pages with which he left us”.
