The Revenger’s Tragedy as seen by Declan Donnellan – the first play directed in Italian for the great English director, and his first collaboration with the Piccolo – has been met with great acclaim ever since its debut in January 2020. In March of the same year, the play made its first “international” debut on the prestigious stage of the Barbican Theatre in London, with a run of 78 performances in total. At the end of the year it will continue its tour, once again in Europe. The majority of the actors involved are various generations of graduates of the Piccolo Teatro School of Theatre.
In an unspecified Italian court, Graziana’s sons and Castiza’s brothers Vindice and Ippolito meet in front of the Ducal Palace. Vindice, as his name suggests, seeks vengeance at any price for the death of his fiancée Gloriana, who was raped and poisoned by the Duke just before they were due to wed. In order to succeed with his daring plan, he will have to disguise himself and assume the role of an admirer, thus gaining the favour of those in power. From that privileged position, he will have the opportunity of observing how corruption is not only inseparable from power, but how it has unfortunately also begun to infect the members of his own family...
This was the idea that allowed Thomas Middleton to create, at the very beginning of the 17th century, a theatrical drama which is above all a reflection on the plots, corruption, hypocrisy and violence which characterised political life at the time.
A master of Shakespearian theatre and its contemporary re-reading, Donnellan focuses on dark irony, on paradox, on the feverish melancholy which envelops the characters, bringing to light - also through an entertaining touch of “pulp” and an irresistible score - the extraordinary convergence between the original work and the present day.
In its latest staging, the play has undergone an artistic reassessment that interprets the current health regulations.
