The theatrical company Kepler-452 boards the Sea-Watch 5, to personally investigate the most lethal migratory route in the world. Nicola Borghesi takes to the stage with a number of rescue workers encountered during the journey, to reflect on what Europe wants to be, and what it could become.

The theatrical company Kepler-452 sets sail with the ship Sea-Watch 5, which is involved in rescue operations in the central Mediterranean area. They do not yet know what they are looking for; they have for some time been hearing news of events a few kilometres off the Italian coast, and the idea is to personally investigate one of the most lethal migratory routes in the world.
The show is the result of a long period of field research, beginning with an encounter with the operators of Sea-Watch and EMERGENCY and a residency in Lampedusa, as well as the actual mission. Over the course of almost five weeks at sea, the crew of the Sea-Watch 5 rescue 156 people who then disembarked in a «place of safety», the safe port of La Spezia.
Together with Nicola Borghese are some of the rescue workers encountered during the journey, who have become a part of the show. They are Flavio Catalano, a technical officer for the Italian Navy; Miguel Duarte, physician and mathematician; Giorgia Linardi, legal expert and spokesperson for Sea-Watch; Floriana Pati, a specialised nurse, and José Ricardo Peña, a maritime electrician. Part of the dramaturgy by Kepler-452, their accounts mark stages in a personal and collective mission; from the fear felt before departure to the reasons that drove them to embark; from the initial operations at sea to the complex return journey.
The result is A place of safety, a reflection on what Europe wants to be, what it is not, and what it could become.
The play contains references to “hate speech” and racist expressions
Show in Italian, English, Spanish and Portuguese with surtitles in Italian and English
Duration: 1 hour and 50 minutes without intermission
