Written in occupied France – and conceived both as an allegory of Resistance to power and as a reflection on the tension between obedience and dissent – Antigone by Jean Anouilh is given a new voice in the theatrical re-reading by Roberto Latini, who presents it as a contemporary theatrical device that now, as it did when it was created, examines the unresolved clash between law and conscience and between politics and ethics.
«Antigone is part of the destiny of Theatre in every era. It is one of the archetypical models that accompanies us, irrespective of history, culture, religion or viewpoint» explains Latini, who, here, also plays the lead role. «I see this work as a soliloquy of multiple voices. An intimate and secret confession of authentic, uncomfortable, incapable and partial truth, one that tells us that nostalgia precedes us all; aware as we have always been that that graveless body is us, still alive. This is also why I have assigned the roles in two differing yet complementary ways. Some characters correspond with themselves, while others are reflections. Antigone and Creon face each other in a mirror; the actor playing Antigone is a reflection of Creon, and the actor playing Creon is a reflection of Antigone.»
