Thirty years on, Federico Tiezzi and Sandro Lombardi bring the final chapter of the Trilogia degli scarrozzanti by Giovanni Testori back to the stage; the tragic and grotesque story, presented with explosive prose, of a company lead forced, evening after evening, to perform Sophocles’s Oedipus all by himself.

Teatro Studio Melato
Federico Tiezzi and Sandro Lombardi return, thirty years on from their first staging, to the explosive and revolutionary Edipus, by Giovanni Testori. In 1994, just a few months on from the death of the author, the show courageously refocused attention on his work. With Edipus, 1977, Giovanni Testori completed his Trilogia degli scarrozzanti, a fantastical reinventing of the tragic, grotesque and desperate world of a group of ham actors, in which Sophocles and Shakespeare share space with the curtain raiser, melodrama meets variety, and myth and reality come together.
The protagonist is a company lead who stages Sophocles’s tragedy on his own, performing all the roles and, as the show unfolds, confusing the story with that of his disastrous personal life.
Written in 1977 for the talented Franco Parenti, the work, which came in the wake of L’Ambleto and Macbetto, proved to also be perfect for Lombardi. «Who would have thought», wrote Franco Quadri, «that a Tuscan from the Casentino area would become the ideal performer for Giovanni Testori?».
Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes without intermission
