In Han Kang’s books, the power of the bond between sisters emerges every time, in a range of forms. On stage, alone, we see the sister who believes she has made it, the one who, «since she was a child had the strength of character to make her way in the world». Incessant domestic violence provides the backdrop. And behind that, the violence of the world.

Elogio della vita a rovescio (In Praise of a Topsy-Turvy Lifestyle), a title borrowed from an essay by Karl Kraus, is a production based on the work of the Korean author Han Kang, Nobel Prize in Literature 2024. The two-year project led to the staging in 2024 of her masterpiece The Vegetarian.
Elogio della vita a rovescio focuses on the relationship between sisters, one of the most closely studied by Han Kang in her books. As well as in the better-known The Vegetarian, Convalescence and White Book also reveal the power of this bond, each time in a different form. On stage, alone, we see the sister who believes she has made it, the one who, «since she was a child, possessed the innate strength of character to make her way in the world. As a daughter, as an elder sister, as a business owner, and even as a passenger on the underground on the shortest of trips, she always did her best».
The osmosis between the two sisters is an endless flow, overturning concepts such as health, awareness and the justness of decisions, and the praise of a topsy-turvy lifestyle is the recognition that the other, the sister, the strange and cracked one, the one who has left us or who is leaving, has gone, and has done what she did for us as well. In the background, the incessant violence of domestic relations.
Even the – apparently – most innocent. And behind that, the violence of the world.
Duration: 1 hour without intermission
