Drawing on the intersecting stories of two women and two eras – Lucia, arrested in Bologna in 1709 and sentenced to death for infanticide, and a contemporary writer who decides to create a documentary based on her – the play by Tolja Djoković focuses on the social codification of women’s bodies and the violence to which they are subject.

Teatro Studio Melato
Bologna, 1709. Lucia C., a twenty-five-year-old woman, unmarried and with her father dead, is arrested and sentenced to death with the accusation of having killed her newborn son. A contemporary woman, a documentary writer and director, investigates the case and, interweaving her own story with that of Lucia, ends up including herself in the report.
Winner of the 57th edition of the Riccione Theatre Award, Lucia camminava sola by Tolja Djoković ties together the destinies of two women and two eras, reflecting on the social determination of the female body and the sense of unfamiliarity that the experience of maternity can bring.
Through a combination of archive material and research, the documentary maker looks back over the final year of Lucia’s life; with an attentive gaze and scientific curiosity, she analyses the metamorphosis of the female body as it prepares for birth in 18th-century society, transforming anatomic study into an in-depth study of the obsessive gaze, the importance of being seen and of seeing. A «cutting, streamlined and meticulous» text that, as the motivation for the Award read, «develops a sophisticated and unpredictable reflection on the social codification of bodies, on violence and on the exposure that it brings, and on a form of brutality that becomes political device.»
A show recommended for audiences aged 14 and over
