Identidad: La libertad de ser/ Identity: The freedom to be is the title of the 12th edition of the Milano Flamenco Festival at the Teatro Strehler from 25 to 28 June. The programme is offering three performances - two showing for the first time in Italy - which offer an in-depth examination of the identity of the female universe and the freedom of expression.
The Festival opens with ¡Viva!, the new creation by Manuel Liñan who, following his successful appearance in 2018, returns to the Piccolo with a new show (25 June); this will be followed by De la concepción with the María Moreno Company (26 June) and lastly Distopía with the Patricia Guerrero company (28 June).
The concept of dystopia counters that of utopia, and while the latter represents a world where everything is as it should be, dystopia is its opposite: an undesirable and frightening world where everything is taken to extremes. Patricia Guerrero freely draws inspiration from the Hieronymus Bosch painting The garden of earthly delights, and with the skilful directing of Juan Dolores Caballero dives into a world suspended between dream and reality, truth and delirium, in the grip of a society which is apparently friendly but which in reality imprisons her, stripping her of her self, her body, and transforming her into a kind of automaton. A journey through the most deep-set of emotions and conflict between that which she if forced to be and that which she wants to be, expressed through the power of Flamenco and the strong personality of Patricia Guerrero and enriched by touches of Neoclassicism and opera.
She sees herself as a bailaora of her times, a modern-day “flamenca”. An enfant prodige, she was born and raised in the Arab quarter of Granada, el Albayzin. She began studying dance at the age of three with her mother Carmen, a Flamenco teacher. At the age of eight she performed for the first time, she came to the Mario Maya company when she was fifteen, and she won her first award at the age of seventeen, El Desplante, at the Festival de Cante de las Minas (La Uníon). She was chosen by the director Carlos Saura as a solo performer for the performance Flamenco Today and later for the film Flamenco, Flamenco, becoming the prima ballerina at the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía. A rising star, between 2012 and 2016 she won two Giraldillo awards, the most important in the world of Flamenco: the first as emerging artist, and the second, Best production for Catedral in 2016.
Milano Flamenco Festival is an event organised by Punto Flamenco AC with the artistic direction of Maria Rosaria Mottola and the support of the Ministerio Educaciòn, Cultura y Deporte de España – Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y la Música (INAEM) and the collaboration of the Istituto Cervantes.
