Andrea Baracco stages Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, rewritten by Letizia Russo. The highly original story of the Devil who visits Moscow, and his relationships with a range of extraordinary characters finds its ideal expressive setting on the stage.

Piccolo Teatro Strehler

One of the most powerful works of the twentieth century, a fascinating, magical and disturbing novel for generations of readers all around the world, The Master and Margarita tells of how, in 1930s Moscow, the Devil in the guise of an expert in black magic who goes by the name of Woland spreads confusion together with his bizarre gang of helpers. Woland is particularly interested in a mysterious writer, the Master, who is interned in a psychiatric clinic following frequent rejections from literary critics, and in his lover, Margarita, hopelessly in love and due to the adverse circumstances of their meeting, incapable of finding peace and serenity. In the meantime, in Jerusalem, the Procurator of Judea Pontius Pilate, who is processing a man by the name of Joshua Hanozri for sedition, is assailed by questions of conscience.

“In this novel - explains the director Andrea Baracco - good and evil constantly intermingle, creating an almost funambulatory and pyrotechnical situation which is permanently on the brink of the impossible, the grotesque, the miserable and the sublime. There is both laughter and tears, often at the same time. In other words, life, always”.
