Arlecchino by Carlo Goldini and Giorgio Strehler comes back to life with sets by Ezio Frigerio, costumes by Franca Squarciapino and the talent of young actors directed by Stefano de Luca. Enrico Bonavera is Arlecchino and Andrea Coppone is Brighella; some performances will see the two actors switch roles, for the first time ever in the play’s long history.

Teatro Grassi
Masks, candles, brocade and the allure of the 1700s; a traditional part of every season, Arlecchino by Giorgio Strehler, with sets by Ezio Frigerio and costumes by the Oscar-winner Franca Squarciapino, returns to its home in Via Rovello. The most-seen Italian play in the world will be performed by young actors from the Piccolo School of Theatre, under the guidance of the director Stefano de Luca who, together with Enrico Bonavera, in the lead role, has introduced them to the secrets of Goldoni and Strehler’s theatre. The result is a play that is both ages old and timeless, that - with a blend of fun and ritual, memory and future - tells an everlasting tale of lovers, of parents and children, of masters and servants, and of love and death, with duels, mistaken identities, laughter and the poignant awareness of the passage of time. Bonavera’s Arlecchino is joined by Andrea Coppone’s Brighella, and in some performances, the two Zanni switch roles, something that has never been seen before in the 78-year history of an age-old yet timeless show that, with its blend of fun and ritual, of memory and future, is a constant source of surprise.
Arlecchino is a play that also continues to serve as an idealistic passing of the baton between generations of artists – the company that will be performing is composed of actors born between the end of the Nineties and the beginning of the new millennium – and underscores the role of the Piccolo Teatro’s School of Theatre in theatrical education and in sharing knowledge and the secrets of the stage.
