Daria Deflorian returns as director and actor to stage the mysterious, powerful, irrational and political acts of Yeong-hye, the main character in The Vegetarian, a novel by Han Kang, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. Humanity is harmful, furious, murderous and violent, all things that Yeong-hye does not want to be. She does not want to stop living. She wants to stop living like us.

Teatro Grassi
The project is a theatrical adaptation of the novel by the South Korean author Han Kang, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Vegetarian was the book that introduced Italy to her writing in 2016 and that also won her the Man Booker International Prize the same year.
It is the story of Yeong-hye who, in the words of her husband that open the first chapter, is a «completely unremarkable» woman. A diligent housekeeper, a reasonably attentive wife and a not-entirely-unhappy young woman, yet with no significant passion. Her husband is a mediocre and not particularly ambitious clerk, who is slightly, but not dramatically, unsatisfied with his life. Time passes, and the two continue to live their ordinary lives, but their normality is more fragile than they realise. The cracks emerge the day that Yeong-hye throws out all the meat from the freezer, announcing that from that moment on, she is vegetarian, explaining simply to her husband that «I had a dream».
This is a sensual, provocative and violent work, full of powerful images, surprising colour and disturbing questions. The language of the book evolves with the main character, from the disconcerted irritation expressed through the first-person narrative of her husband in the first part, to the measured prose of her sister, to the dense and bloody narrative of Yeong-hye’s dreams and the vivid descriptions of bodies painted with blossoming or fading flowers in the chapter dedicated to her brother-in-law. Sentence after sentence, The Vegetarian is an extraordinary experience.
