Andrea De Rosa directs Anna Della Rosa in an adaptation of one of the most original novels of the Twentieth century. With the boundless vitality of its protagonist, Orlando interweaves biography and literature in what can be considered a true celebration of life, a monument of words and gestures that breaks down the boundaries of gender and identity.

Teatro Studio Melato
Under the direction of Andrea De Rosa, and with dramaturgy by Fabrizio Sinisi, who has integrated the new Italian translation of the novel by Nadia Fusini with excerpts of correspondence published in the book Scrivi sempre a mezzanotte (Donzelli Editore) – Orlando takes to the stage in a performance by Anna Della Rosa, who was recently presented the Duse Award as well as an award from the National Theatrical Critics’ Association.
On 9 October 1927, Virginia Woolf wrote to her beloved Vita Sackville-West: «Suppose Orlando turns out to be about Vita; and it’s all about you and the lusts of your flesh and the lure of your mind... Shall you mind?». Vita did not mind; she agreed to become the subject, muse, model and interlocutor of one of the most original novels in modern literature.
This is the origin of Orlando, according to Fabrizio Sinisi «the most daring love letter in history», a tribute and an expression of joy to a woman and to the world. If it is true, as the director Andrea De Rosa reminds us, that «identity is a ghost», Orlando is an invitation to «travel through space and time, to step beyond the picket fence that holds us imprisoned in the trap of identity, of masculine and feminine, and of all those conventions that are nothing more than the fruit of the era in which we live».
With the boundless vitality of its protagonist, a man born in the 16th century who lived for more than four hundred years to then become a woman, the work blends biography and literature to create a monument of words and gestures that breaks down the boundaries of gender and identity.
