Christiane Jatahy comes to the end of her Trilogy of Horrors. Between documentary and fiction, between cinema and theater, the spotlight is on the ancient link that unites racism and capitalism. Are we sure the era of colonial violence is really over? And that the slave trade is now just a history book topic?

After Entre chien et loup – presented at the Piccolo in May 2022 on the occasion of the Presente indicativo: per Giorgio Strehler (paesaggi teatrali) Festival –, which investigated the mechanics of fascism starting from the film Dogville by Lars von Trier, and Before the sky falls, which pointed the finger at toxic masculinity and the political power of the patriarchy, starting from the Shakespearean Macbeth, Christiane Jatahy comes to the conclusion of her Trilogy of Horrors.
Depois do silêncio brings to the stage the close bond that unites racism and capitalism. From the age of the slave trade to the policies implemented by personalities like Jair Bolsonaro, little seems to have changed: there are those who own land, freedom, and identity. And then there are those who have nothing.
Starting from the novel Torto Arado (Twisted Plow) by Itamar Vieira Junior – which tells the battles of three women in the state of Bahia – and from the documentary by Eduardo Coutinho Cabra marcado para morrer (A man marked by death) dedicated to the murder of the leader of a rural union, the show connects the past to the present in the hope of clearing the field for a new, and better, future.
According to the director, Leone d’Oro for Lifetime Achievement at the last Venice Biennale, it is necessary to change perspective on the theme of social injustice in Brazil and talk about it «from the point of view of the people who were – and still are –  massacred by a capitalist system that still persists today. It is a question of addressing the problem of land and territories, letting those who have written and continue to write this story speak every day with their body, their blood, their voice. The blacks and the natives».
